As much as the observation and diagnosis of states, in this case the state of the world, similar to medicine, is actually only an observational description, which, similar to a great revolution, knows no permanence, scientific research as a phenomenon always remains in a provisional state. The prescribed verification, falsification and processing of already existing data pushes any binding statement further and further into the future of the same research, and turns the natural sciences into a gigantic field of applied, because enforced, procrastination. Blue sky research is hardly any different from other research in the sciences. It pursues the so-called application, i.e. the question of what a concrete application of this or that research could consist of, with almost the same freneticism as towards the research object itself. The answers to this question oscillate between the interest in commercialization and the interest in greater control of procedures and processes. Goethe’s famous sorcerer’s apprentice is the inspiration here, as is the ominous word of God that man should “subdue the earth”. The magical manipulation of matter is the primal dream of all technological research and of man, and at the same time the primal cause of all the real nightmares of this world.
To diagnose means to extract a formula from a process: How does it work?
As a child of the 1970s, I was blessed with books and television programs with titles like: How does it work? … a technical device was explained in a child-friendly way.
Today I live, as we all live in such a child-friendly world, because most devices are actually designed so that they can be operated by small children. The most impressive and at the same time shocking example of this is the family next to me in the restaurant, whose toddlers are given a tablet or smartphone to watch cartoons while they eat together. To put it more correctly, they are sedated with these cartoons. Or on public transport: People play simple video games to pass the time. Nobody gets into a conversation with a person standing next to them or seeks a conversation.
So what interests us, first of all, is to find out how the >>Monde machine>>, the world as a machine, works, just as French philosopher Julien Offray de La Mettrie in 1747 fabulated about the >>Homme machine<<. Unfortunately, this unfortunate fabulation has become a kind of founding myth of the Enlightenment, and thus of the technological age of the world, starting from a Europe that was also lastingly shaped by fairy tales such as Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1620ies) and its idealization of a paradisiacal form of society based on a completely rationalized technological world.
What is particularly perfidious about these imprints is that they continue to have an effect for centuries, whereby the traces of authorship are lost. The content remains, even becomes the basic principles and beliefs of entire societies and cultures, is stylized into a no longer assignable, even divine law as a guide to action and an imperative for thought, becomes a maxim that shapes centuries, and lead to the global locked-in symptom we are facing now. This is a situation in which both mental and real constellations can no longer be abandoned. The status quo of the world, the state of the world, is frozen. >>Mental entropy<<, or call it vision and open perspectives and thus also a change, even an alternative to the status quo becomes utopian. In a word, every future has become a utopia.

Zukunft als Utopie
So sehr auch das Betrachten und Diagnostizieren von Zuständen, in diesem Fall dem Zustand der Welt, ähnlich wie in der Medizin, eigentlich nur eine betrachtende Beschreibung ist, die, ähnlich einer großen Revolution keine Permanenz kennt, verharrt diese Forschung als Phänomen immer in einem Vorläufigen. Die vorgeschriebene Überprüfung, Falsifizierung, die Verarbeitung von bereits existierenden Daten schiebt jegliche verbindliche Aussage immer weiter in eine Zukunft derselben Forschung, und macht die Naturwissenschaften zu einem gigantischen Feld angewandten, weil erzwungenen Prokrastinierens. Die Blue-Sky-Forschung unterscheidet sich kaum von anderen Forschungen in den Wissenschaften. Sie geht mit nahezu der gleichen Frenesie wie gegenüber dem Forschungsgegegnstand selbst der sogenannten Applikation nach, also der Frage, worin eine konkrete Anwendung dieser oder jener Forschung bestehen könnte. Die Antworten darauf oszillieren zwischen dem Interesse an einer Vermarktung und dem Interesse an einer größeren Kontrolle von Vorgängen und Prozessen. Der berühmte Zauberlehrling von Goethe steht hier Pate und das ominöse Wort Gottes, der Mensch solle sich die Erde untertan machen. Das zauberhafte Manipulieren der Materie ist der Ur-Traum allen technologischen Forschens und des Menschen, und zugleich Ur-Sache aller realer Alpträume dieser Welt.
Diagnostizieren bedeutet, einem Vorgang seine ihm supponierte Formel abzugewinnen: Wie funktioniert das?
Als Kind der 1970er-Jahre wurde ich mit Büchern und Fernsehsendungen beglückt, die einen solchen Titel trugen: Wie funktioniert das? … ein technisches Gerät wurde kindgerecht erklärt.
Heute lebe ich, leben wir alle in einer solchen kindgerechten Welt, denn die meisten Geräte sind tatsächlich so angelegt, dass sie von Kleinkindern bedient werden könnnen. Das eindrücklich und zugleich erschütternde Beispiel dafür ist die Familie neben mir im Restaurant, deren Kleinkinder ein Tablet oder Smartphone vor die Nase gesetzt bekommen, wo sie während des gemeinsamen Essens Zeichentrickfilme sehen. Richtiger gesagt, werden sie mit diesen Filmen ruhig gestellt. Oder in den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln: Menschen spielen simple Viedeospiele, um sich die Zeit zu vertreiben. Niemand kommt mit einer nebenstehenden Person in ein Gespräch oder sucht ein Gespräch. Was also interessiert, zunächst, ist die Funktionsweise des >>Monde machine>>, der Welt als Maschine, heraus zu finden, so wie auch Julien Offray de La Mettrie 1747 vom >>Homme machine<< fabulierte. Leider ist diese unglückliche Fabulation zu einer Art Gründungmythos der Aufklärung, und damit des technologischen Zeitalters der Welt geworden, ausgehend von einem Europa, das auch durch Märchen wie Francis Bacons’New Atlantis und dessen Idealisierung einer paradiesischen Gesellschaftsform auf Basis einer völlig durchrationalisierten Technologischen Welt nachhaltig geprägt wurde.
Was an diesen Prägungen besonders perfide ist: Sie wirken Jahrhunderte lang nach, wobei sich die Spuren der Urheberschaften verlieren. Die Inhalte bleiben, werden sogar zu Grund- und Glaubenssätzen ganzer Gesellschaften und Kulturen, werden zu einer nicht mehr zuordenbaren, gar göttlichen Gesetzmäßigkeit als Handlungsanleitung und Denk-Imperativ stilisiert, werden zur Maxime, die Jahrhunderte prägt, und führten zu einem globalen Locked-In-Symptom. Das ist eine Situation, in der sowohl mentale als auch reale Konstellationen nicht mehr verlassen werden können. Der Status Quo der Welt, der Weltzustand, ist eingefroren, die Entropie und damit auch einer Veränderung, sogar eine Alternative wird utopisch. Mit einem Wort, jegliche Zukunft ist zur Utopie geworden.
