VDE
Video Display Editor
VDE is a versatile and fast text editor for the DOS by Eric Meyer.
It dates back to the 1980ies. It works with e.g. FreeDOS. Mouse supported.

What i personally like:
- stability - I never had a crash, never lost any text
- speed. VDE instantly opens
- large Files
- many functions
- allows for "cursor follows mouse" (my preference)
- allows 23 lines in DOS. Great for easy reading.
- utf8 or ascii encoding able
- printing works (on HP LaserJet via Centronics parallel, has many options)
