ZOON (sprich ZO-ON), bezeichnet bei Aristoteles den Menschen als soziales Lebewesen, das sich in einem bestimmten Raum aufhält, im Fall einer (Musik-) Theatergruppe auf einer „Bühne“.
1994 von Thomas Desi gegründet, steht ZOON für die Kreation von neuem Musiktheater in wechselnden Formaten. Als Zwischenform von Oper, Sprechtheater und Medien/Performance-Kunst spielt Musik oder musikalisch komponierte Struktur im Musiktheater die Hauptrolle. Sänger, Sprechschauspieler, Sing-Schauspieler, (Musik-) Performer und Musiker treten innerhalb einer Produktion gemeinsam auf.
Der aus der Musik stammende Begriff der „Komposition“ wird hier zum Konzept für eine Orchestrierung von Theaterelementen erweitert: Sprache, Gestik, Spiel, Musik, Licht etc.
Thomas Desi, founder of ZOON in 1994, is a trained composer, conducter and theoritian who moved into musictheater and opera production and directing. Desi has also been working with David Pountney ("Die Soldaten", 2005) and co-autoring a book "The New Music Theaters" (Oxford University Press N.Y., 2009), besides productions of new music theater pieces as reknown festivals such as Bregenzer Festspiele, START Salzburg, Wien Modern, Donaufestival and at venues in Italy, Germany, France and New York (Center for Contemporary Opera).
ZOON (pronounce: ZO-ON) is Aristotle's definition for the human being as a social animal, acting in a defined space. That is, in our case, the stage.
ZOON was founded in 1994 by composer/director Thomas Desi (Vienna, Austria). Individual forms of theater all based on music, include actors, singers, performers in the same production. The musical term "composition" becomes an overall working method for including theatrical elements such as spoken word, gesture, acting, light and sound.
The 4-year-term project "ZOON 0910111213" (where the numbers designate the planned years for this project) starts off with a series on historical facts and events in Europe around 1940.
